Sedation

Sedation Dentistry

Anxiolysis is a form of oral sedation that uses a light sedative, for example Valium. Anxiolysis is a preferred option for those who experience mild to moderate anxiety when having dental procedures done, as it is not as strong as oral conscious sedation. Under this degree of sedation, the patient will remain conscious during the procedure, but the sedative properties of the drug will drive away tension or restlessness. The patient will retain the ability to talk and breathe on their own during the procedure, but prior to the appointment the patient must arrange for a second person to drive them to and from the appointment.

Nitrous Oxide, generally known as laughing gas, is the most commonly chosen sedative option for dental patients. While carefully monitored by a doctor, the patient is administered the nitrous oxide through a nasal breathing apparatus, causing the patient to enter a euphoric state and release feelings of anxiety and fear. The laughing gas sedation process is safe and effective, and the patient will be able to sit back and relax during the procedure.

Because nitrous oxide is a stronger sedative, the patient will need to come in before the procedure to ensure that he or she is an eligible candidate for this form of sedation.
